Nevada is popularly known as the worldwide gambling capital. Situated in the heart of this thriving community is one of the most historic casinos to date. The Cal Neva Lodge, which was formerly owned by no less than Frank Sinatra himself from the years 1960 to 1963, is expected to re-open in the near future after having closed its business operations on the 31st of March last year. It is to return in the spotlight in a limited basis after voluntarily shutting its doors to the general public, ten months ago, due to the economic recession that struck down most of America’s commercial industries.

By the 28th of January 2011, Cal Neva Lodge, the 5,365 square foot property situated between the borders of the states of California and Nevada, will once again offer its services to the public. Only the casino floors were shut down, while its amenities such as the hotel itself and its dining and entertainment venues remained open and functional. The casino was first established in the year 1926 but tragedy struck as a fire destroyed the hotel’s structures. The present foundation of the existing lodge was constructed in 1937. Currently, it is comprised of 220 rooms including cabins, chalets, and tower rooms in its exact address in Crystal Bay, Nevada. For Cal Neva’s opening date this month, the resort is initially offering 40 video poker and slot machines in the lobby of the hotel. Along with this, a bar was also erected as part of the new venture. If the casino operations prove to equal or surpass developers’ anticipated earnings, gaming tables could become a part of gambling schemes offered in this establishment.

In a story reported by the Associated Press last Thursday, Grant Lincoln, Chief Executive Officer of Reno-based Strategic Gaming Management, voiced his opinions regarding Cal Neva’s fate in the world of gambling. “It will all be driven by the market. It’s a difficult time for everyone involved in gambling. We’ll have to slowly rebuild it.” Lincoln’s gaming management organization is the official contractor responsible for overseeing the hotel’s gambling operations. The person primarily controlling Cal Neva’s operations for the group, Eric Dale, general manager of Baldini’s Sports Casino in Sparks, announced his plans of acquiring a duly allotted license from gambling state regulators before the end of this month, to conclude with the hotel’s re-opening. Dale further stated minor prospects he had up his sleeve for the historic lodge. “It will be a small offering at first. That is based on the time of year, as casinos rely more on the local market during the winter.”

Cal Neva Lodge’s revival has resurrected earlier memories of its once glorious days. During Sinatra’s ownership, fellow Rat Pack co-stars frequented the property such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford. Renowned names like Joe DiMaggio and Juliet Prowse were just as regular in visiting this site, which is one of Nevada’s first legal casinos. Before having been stripped off of its gambling license during the Sinatra days by the Nevada Gaming Control Board due to the spreading rumours and sightings of Chicago mobster Sam Giancana on the premises, famous actress Judy Garland was first discovered performing with her sisters on its stage by MGM talent scouts, decades earlier. But probably most historic of all celebrities to have frequented in this hotel is Marilyn Monroe. Adding to this historical incident is Monroe’s having spent her final weekend in Cal Neva before dying of drug overdose in Los Angeles in August of 1962. Until now, the cabin she stayed in remains preserved and readily offered as part of a tour.

In 2009, Cal Neva Lodge’s primary ownership was transferred to Los Angeles based company, Canyon Capital Realty Advisors. The hotel was closed down under their tenure owing to its $25 million loan which ended in a foreclosure. Grant Lincoln added his insights on the aspects concerning Cal Neva Lodge’s re-opening. “It’s a legendary type property, but obviously it’s been tarnished over the last couple of years. The new ownership is in there doing a great job, but I think it’s going to take some crawl, walk, run situations to rebuild it. It won’t be easy, but it’s a lot easier to rebuild a property with a legendary quality.”
