The battle for the Category 3 Gaming License at Pennsylvania has ended. The said license was pursued by four different candidates around the state, including those from Gettysburg, Mechanicsburg, Poconos and Fayette County. At the State’s Gaming Control Board bimonthly meeting, a 6 to 1 vote was concluded, with the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Wharton Township, Fayette County as the victor of the coveted Resort Casino License.

Last April 14, 2011, Thursday, the seven-member Gaming Control Board convened at the State Museum to discuss various issues in the State, with the issue on the gaming license first on its agenda. After more than a year of regular meetings and consultations with the people concerned on this project, the board rendered its final decision. The license at stake, which was a Category 3 Gaming License, was awarded to the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Fayette County. The said license was to be the second and the last of its kind to be released by the Gaming Control Board in Pennsylvania. Prior to the decision rendered, only the Valley Forge Convention Center was operating with a Category 3 license in the state. Accordingly, this decision is in line with the provisions of the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act, stating that only two Category 3 License issuances are allowed in the State. Moreover, the Act requires a licensing fee summing up to $12.5 dollars and limits the number of operational casinos up to 600 slot machines and 50 table games only. The purpose of this Act is to control the gambling in the area, but at the same time, to collect revenues for the State’s use.

The final vote was 6 to 1, in favor of the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. The only “no” vote was cast by Board Member Kenneth Trujillo, who believed that the proposal from the Fernwood Hotel at the Poconos would result to bigger tax collections and revenues for the State due to the Hotel’s site, which was near densely populated areas. However, the other 6 board members believed that the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort was the best project proposal among others, Board Chairman Gregory Fajt included. “This was a challenging decision, but when all was said and done, the Board felt the Nemacolin project best fit the intent of the Gaming Act and was best overall for Pennsylvania.”, he said. Among those who competed for the license were: the Eisenhower Inn situated in Gettysburg, the Park Inn located in Mechanicsburg, and the Fernwood Hotel established in Poconos. The Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is located at the south of Pittsburgh in western Pennyslvania. Stretching over 2000 acres of land, this Resort has been rated with AAA Five Diamond status for its Falling Rock Hotel in 2006 and another AAA Five Diamond Status for its Chateau LaFayette Hotel in 2008. The Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s wide array of amenities includes, but not limited to, a spa, a golf course, a fine dining experience and soon, a casino.

The Lady Luck Casino, which is the name of the soon-to-open casino, will be supervised by the Isle of Capri, Inc. Its gaming floor will be 90,000 square feet wide and will be fully equipped with 600 slot machines to try your luck with, 28 table games to play at, a restaurant to enjoy a memorable dining experience, and a lounge where the casino’s customers may mingle with other players. With its worth reaching an estimated $50 million, the Lady Luck Casino is due to be finished within 9 months after the formal gaming license is awarded. Upon its creation, the Lady Luck Casino would offer an estimated 600 jobs for the locals in Fayette County and for the people in Pennysylvania. Likewise, the Casino is expected to generate more tourist visits in the State and additional revenues for the government through its world-class amenities.

It is also notable that during the quest for this coveted Category 3 Gaming License, a controversy arose on building a casino in the Eisenhower Inn, which is situated near the Gettysburg battlefield. Oppositionists, who are members of the No Casino Gettysburg, claimed that a casino placed in close proximity to a historical landmark dishonors those who died there.
